Eric Winter said The Rookie filmed an alternate ending for season eight because the cast did not know whether the show would return. The reveal changes the way that May finale now reads: Tim Bradford’s proposal to Lucy Chen was not the only ending the production had ready.
Winter made the disclosure at Comic-Con 2026 over the weekend, after ABC had already announced in April that the series would come back for a ninth season. That timing is what makes the detail land now. Viewers already know the show survived, but the cast did not when the last episode was being wrapped, and Winter said, “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back.”
The season eight ending that aired in May gave Chenford a major turn. Tim proposed to Lucy, then both were kidnapped minutes later, leaving the episode on a cliffhanger that immediately pushed the relationship into the next season’s orbit. Winter said the backup version “would’ve been different” and called it a “spoiler,” which is about as close as he came to saying what producers had planned if the show had not been renewed.
That is the part that makes the story more than a piece of trivia. ABC’s renewal came after the uncertainty of the wrap, not before it, so the cast had to work as if season eight might be the end. Winter said, “Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time,” and for a long-running procedural like The Rookie, the existence of a backup ending shows just how close the production came to locking its doors on a very different final scene.
The series has been a steady performer for ABC, and the network has said it ranks among its top 15 entertainment shows with adults 18-49. But the alternate-ending detail gives the renewal a sharper edge: the show did not just extend its run, it escaped a cutoff that the cast was preparing for while they were still filming. Season nine is expected in early 2027, and the unanswered piece is the one Winter would not spell out — what ending the audience never got to see.
