The Recording Academy is adding Best Asian Pop Music Performance for the 2027 ceremony, and that gives BTS its clearest new route yet to a first Grammy trophy as a performing act. The group still has five nominations and no wins, but the new category creates a lane that did not exist before for K-pop and other pop recordings that meaningfully use at least one Asian language.
That is why the search interest around Bts Grammy is spiking now. BTS has been everywhere the Grammys have been slow to fully reward: Dynamite, Butter and My Universe all reached Best Pop Duo/Group Performance; Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment) was nominated for Best Music Video; and BTS even appeared inside Coldplay’s Album of the Year nomination for Music of the Spheres, which put the group into the Grammys’ biggest album race. None of BTS’s own albums has been nominated on its own.
The new category matters because it changes the board immediately. BTS could now be judged not only through the pop lanes it has already come up short in, but also through a field built for the kind of music it makes. The Recording Academy says the prize will recognize K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other pop recordings that meaningfully incorporate at least one Asian language, which fits the category’s purpose more cleanly than the general-pop races ever did.
Rosé is part of the reason the moment feels bigger for K-pop broadly. She is one of the few K-pop stars singled out as having earned a Grammy nomination, alongside BTS’s own five-nomination run, which still ends the same way: no trophy. For a genre that has become a major commercial force in the United States, the Grammys have moved slower than the market.
That gap is exactly where the friction sits. BTS is being framed as a leading contender for a possible first win, yet the group remains winless after five nominations. Even its latest burst of momentum does not solve the bigger puzzle of how the Recording Academy will place Swim, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and launched atop the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. The song may be submitted for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Dance Pop Recording or Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and whichever lane is chosen could shape how strong the campaign looks against the new Asian pop category.
BTS also has Arirang, its long-awaited comeback album that arrived this spring and gave the group another No. 1 in America. But the key question is not whether BTS has momentum. It does. The question now is which recording the group puts forward first, because the new category gives BTS a fresh opening while its own Grammy record still has no win attached to it.
