Ocean Casino Resort paused all gaming and betting Monday after a small fire in a linen room and a burst pipe triggered leaks and ceiling damage inside the Atlantic City property. No one was hurt, but slots, table games and sports betting were all suspended for the day.
The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m., and crews from the Atlantic City Fire Department were on scene as the water issue unfolded while firefighters were putting out the blaze. Water from the leak caused part of the lobby ceiling to collapse and affected hallways and elevators, while the hotel, restaurants, pools and other amenities stayed open.
For people who had planned to gamble, the shutdown changed the day immediately. Crystal said she was trying to play the free slot tournament at Ocean and hoped things would get moving again soon, while the tournament scheduled from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday was canceled along with the casino floor and sports betting.
The resort said the leak affected the building's gaming support systems, which helps explain why the disruption reached well beyond the room where the fire started. That left Ocean in a split state: guests could still eat, sleep and use the property, but the core business that draws gamblers to the resort was offline.
The fire is under investigation, and the company expects casino operations to resume Tuesday. For Ocean, the key question now is not whether the damage was serious enough to force a shutdown — it clearly was — but whether the property can bring the gaming side back without another day of interruption.
