Disneyland resort will temporarily close six attractions in August as its 70th anniversary celebration ends after 15 months. The staggered shutdowns will hit Disneyland and Disney California Adventure at different points in the month, with some closures lasting only a few days and others stretching into early September.
For visitors, the timing matters because the park’s 70th anniversary celebration comes to an end on Aug. 9, just as the busiest summer stretch gives way to refurbishment work. The changes include Haunted Mansion, Main Street Cinema, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes, Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition and Pixie Hollow, making August a month of overlap between celebration, maintenance and reduced access.
Haunted Mansion in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square is scheduled to close from Aug. 8 to 20, then reopen in holiday mode on Aug. 21. Main Street Cinema will be closed from Aug. 10 to 27, and the “Last Verse” video documenting the creation of new lyrics penned by the late Disney songwriter Richard Sherman for the “It’s A Small World” song is expected to be removed from the cinema. Sailing Ship Columbia will be out of service Aug. 3-7 and again Aug. 10-14, while Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes will be closed Aug. 3-6 and Aug. 10-13.
Pixie Hollow in Fantasyland will close on Tuesdays and Thursdays in August, specifically Aug. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27. That schedule follows a recently completed 10-month refurbishment. The Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition, which closed in early July, is expected to remain shuttered through at least early September, and Silly Symphony Swings, closed in April for seasonal refurbishment, is also expected to stay out of commission through at least early September.
There is one clear thread running through the calendar: the 70th anniversary celebration ends on Aug. 9, but the work does not end with it. Some attractions are being turned over quickly for holiday or seasonal use, while others are set to stay closed well after the celebration has faded from view. The result is a resort in transition, with August parkgoers navigating both commemorative changes and ordinary upkeep at the same time.
