Seattle police arrested a 15-year-old suspect after a mass shooting near the Space Needle killed three people and injured at least four others during the final hours of Bite of Seattle. The teenager was being held in a juvenile detention center and was due in court Monday afternoon as officers kept searching for a second suspect.
That arrest gave the case its sharpest update on Monday, but it did not close it. Investigators said they believe the two suspects were shooting at each other on Sunday, and one of them fled while the other surrendered at the scene. Tyrone Davis said there was no ongoing threat to the public, even as police continued to look for the second suspect.
Three people died in the shooting, two at the scene and a third at a hospital. The victims were two men, ages 19 and 44, and a woman, 56. Among the injured was a 2-year-old child, who was in satisfactory condition on Monday, while two injured men, ages 23 and 27, and an injured woman, 39, were discharged from the hospital.
Faith Adia Hunter said she and her friends had just bought crepes and were about to eat when the shots started. She said she heard someone yelling, then saw people running, and her group ran too. She said they were right beside the place where it began, a moment that turned a festival evening into a panic near Seattle Children's Museum.
Bite of Seattle is a three-day annual festival that draws food vendors, retailers and artists, and police said several officers were assigned to security at the event. Vendors abandoned their stalls as the crowd scattered and later returned on Monday to clean up. A candlelight vigil was planned for Monday night at International Fountain, a sign that the city was moving from shock to the hard work of remembering the dead while police kept looking for the second suspect.
