A24’s new Onslaught trailer has done what a teaser could only suggest: it has taken Dan Stevens out of the realm of rumor and put him back in the frame. The footage, released around San Diego Comic-Con, shows Stevens in the cast of the Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett project, but not in a way that looks like a direct return to his character from The Guest.
That matters because fans of The Guest have spent months reading every piece of Onslaught promotional material as a possible sequel clue. Stevens is not the only draw. Onslaught is toplined by Adria Arjona and also includes Drew Starkey, Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn, Eric Wareheim and Reginald VelJohnson, but it is Stevens who now gives the film its clearest connection to the earlier cult title from 2014.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Stevens put the speculation into plain language. “It is a spiritual sequel. That said, it lives in the same universe,” he said, a line that answers the biggest question around the film without making it a direct continuation. The trailer backs that up. It includes Stevens, but the look and setup do not match the version of him that viewers remember from The Guest, which was released in 2014.
That distinction is the whole story. Fans had already suspected Onslaught was tied to The Guest because of the creative credits and because the plot centers on military bloodlust gone awry, a thread that fits the tone of Wingard and Barrett’s earlier work. The promotional material only deepened the theory when it showed Stevens attached to the project, even though the first teaser did not include him at all. For readers trying to place Onslaught on the same shelf as The Guest, that omission is now as telling as the new trailer is revealing.
What remains unresolved is narrower, but it is the part that will keep people watching. Stevens has confirmed the shared universe idea, yet the trailer stops short of showing whether he is playing a second role, a new version of the old one or something else entirely. For now, Onslaught looks less like a straight sequel than a deliberate callback, built to reward Fans of The Guest without promising the same story twice.
