The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will peak together on the night of July 30 into the early hours of July 31, 2026, giving skywatchers a rare double Meteor Shower to watch. But the moon will be nearly full, and that will make the brightest part of the show much easier to see than the faintest streaks.
The timing is drawing attention because July's full moon arrives on July 29, leaving the sky about 98 percent illuminated when the two showers reach their peak the following night. Devon Salasin said that overlap happens by complete happenstance, as debris trails from two different comets intersect where Earth passes through them.
Under ideal viewing conditions, the Southern Delta Aquariids can produce around 25 meteors per hour, while the Alpha Capricornids usually produce around five. That difference matters because the Southern Delta Aquariids tend to scatter numerous faint streaks, while the Alpha Capricornids are known for slower, dazzling fireballs. A fireball is simply an unusually bright meteor, and that is the one form likely to cut through the moonlight.
There is a reason the two showers sometimes seem to share the same night. Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through streams of rocky material left behind by comets, and the particles strike the atmosphere at high speed, heating up and producing the streaks people call shooting stars. The Southern Delta Aquariids stay active from mid-July into late August, and the Alpha Capricornids run from early July into mid-August, so meteors from both can appear well before and after the official peak.
That long activity window gives observers more than one chance, but the nearly full moon on the peak night is still the obstacle. Moonlight will brighten the sky and wash out many of the fainter meteors, so the best bet is to find the darkest available location, let your eyes adjust for at least 20 minutes and look overhead after midnight, when both radiant points rise higher. No telescope is necessary.
Salasin said observers may still catch a glimpse of the Alpha Capricornids' slow-moving, bright fireballs if they stay with it, and that is the part of the night most likely to survive the glare. After that, the next major target is the Perseid Meteor Shower, which is due to peak on the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13, 2026, under darker skies.
