That is the first clear account of how little of Ferguson will be on screen in the next film, which adapts Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah. For viewers looking for answers about Lady Jessica, the news lands now because it settles the question of screen time before the film reaches theaters.
Ferguson first flagged the change earlier this year on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, when she said Lady Jessica was not originally written into the film at all. She said Denis Villeneuve later decided the character needed just one scene, a choice that fits the source novel’s smaller footprint for Paul Atreides’ Bene Gesserit mother.
That economy matters because Lady Jessica was one of the emotional anchors of the first two films. Ferguson said she felt a real sense of FOMO watching her castmates dive into a story she was mostly stepping back from, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jason Momoa all part of the ensemble around her.
The gap between Lady Jessica’s earlier centrality and her near absence now is part of the point.
