Mark Ballas turned a private houseguest gripe into a public joke on July 22, posting video that showed what he described as the aftermath of a visit from Derek Hough in New York City. The clip showed an unmade bed, bottles left behind, pillows on the floor and a toilet seat left up.
Ballas said the mess came after Hough stopped by while he was tied up with Chicago on Broadway, and he framed the post as proof that his longtime friend had been a messy guest. In the caption, Ballas wrote that he had been dealing with the “BS” for 30 years, a line that made the complaint sound less like a one-off and more like a family history.
The reason the post moved so fast is that these two do not read like casual co-stars trading banter. Ballas and Hough first met in the mid-’90s, when Hough and Julianne Hough began dance training with Ballas’ parents, and Hough later marked Ballas’ birthday in May by saying they had 30 years of friendship. That is why a messy room from a visit can land as both a joke and a story: the audience already knows the relationship is real.
Hough answered the complaint with a laughing crying emoji and the words “Office Revenge,” which undercut Ballas’ attempt to make the mess sound serious even as the video supplied the evidence. Hayley Erbert then jumped into the comments to note that the sucker wrapper was only three inches from the trash can, a detail that turned the whole exchange into a bit of public sibling rivalry rather than a simple cleanup dispute.
The friction gets sharper because Hough had already posted a July 20 video about a prank in which he said he was going to put Tiger Balm in Ballas’ underwear and let it dry, adding, “He’s about to feel that razzle on his dazzle.” Put together, the prank and the mess complaint make the exchange look less like one person being wronged and more like two friends running a decades-old scorecard in public.
What Ballas did not say is whether Hough ever cleaned up after the visit, or whether Ballas handled the mess himself before taking the stage as Billy Flynn. For now, the cleaner ending is the one Hough already handed him: after 30 years, the joke is still going, and neither of them seems ready to stop it.
