Atletico Madrid completed the Atletico Madrid Kang-in Lee transfer on Thursday, paying a reported €35 million to bring the South Korean midfielder in from Paris Saint-Germain. He signed through June 30, 2031 and will wear the club's number seven shirt.
The move gives Atletico a 25-year-old international who has already spent most of his career in Spain, and it arrives after a summer in which he represented South Korea at the 2026 World Cup. For a club trying to lock in a long-term attacking option, the timing is as important as the fee: Atletico did not wait for a loan or a stopgap, but committed to a five-year deal that keeps Lee in the Spanish capital well into the next decade.
Lee's path back to Liga makes the signing feel less like a gamble than a return to familiar ground. He joined Valencia's academy at ten, made 62 senior appearances there and won the Copa del Rey in 2019 before moving on to Real Mallorca for 73 appearances and then Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. He has also built a strong international record, with 50 caps for South Korea, a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games and the Golden Ball at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup.
Atletico described him as a left-footed midfielder who can operate in attacking midfield or on either wing, a profile that explains why he is being treated as more than just a name for the shirt. It also sharpens the one question the deal does not answer: why Paris Saint-Germain were prepared to let a player with that range leave for €35 million now, when he still had years left on his side of the market. That answer may only become clear once he starts playing regular minutes in the Spanish capital.
