Marvel Studios has released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and the biggest reveal is Robert Downey Jr. stepping into view as Doctor Doom for the first time in full. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer gives the villainous Victor von Doom a green cloak, a metal mask and a line that makes the stakes sound personal: he says the heroes will be faced with an unthinkable decision.
The trailer arrived after months of teasers and quickly became the reason fans started searching for Robert Downey Jr. again. In its first 24 hours, it pulled in 503 million views, which Marvel Studios describes as the second-largest movie trailer launch of all time. With Avengers: Doomsday set to open in theaters on December 18, the studio is now asking viewers to absorb a familiar face in a completely different role.
That reversal is the story inside the spectacle. Downey spent more than a decade as Tony Stark, so seeing him return to the MCU as Doctor Doom lands with extra force. The trailer briefly teased the character in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but this is the first proper look at the despotic leader of Latveria, and it changes the tone of everything around him. Chris Evans also returns as Steve Rogers for the first time since Avengers: Endgame, with the trailer ending on Rogers summoning Mjolnir after he had last been seen handing his shield to Sam Wilson in 2019.
Marvel also uses the trailer to show how wide the crossover has become. Scott Lang and Cassie share a quiet moment before he moves into a farewell with her and joins the others. Shang-Chi appears after his MCU debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Bucky Barnes is among the heroes assembling, Thor warns that the team is facing a threat unlike anything he has encountered, and he tells them to put aside their petty squabbles because they are going to need a miracle.
The most revealing part may be what the trailer does not explain. Doctor Doom speaks as if the heroes already know the terms of the conflict, but Marvel still has not shown how Robert Downey Jr.'s new role connects to the rest of the MCU beyond the shock of the casting itself. The trailer brings in Marvel's First Family after The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it even shows The Thing shaking hands with M'Baku, but the path from those alliances to Doom's decision remains hidden. For now, Marvel has given the movie its headline image and left the real mechanics for December 18.
