The first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is out, and the film arrives on December 18 with Fox-era X-Men characters coming into the MCU. For viewers who have not followed the mutants’ long run from the start, the latest push is a five-film watchlist built to make that crossover easier to follow.
James Marsden is part of the renewed interest because Avengers: Doomsday is leaning on characters and conflicts that were set up years ago. The recommendation is aimed at younger viewers who may know the name X-Men but not the story lines that made the return of Professor Charles Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops and Mystique land with weight.
The list starts with the first X-Men film, where Wolverine and Rogue are rescued and taken to Professor Charles Xavier’s school, Magneto’s Brotherhood tries to use Rogue’s powers against world leaders, and Xavier and Magneto are defined as rivals with opposite ideas about mutantkind. That same film also introduces Cyclops and Mystique, both of whom are set to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Next is X2: X-Men United, which raises the stakes when Colonel William Stryker raids Xavier’s school and abducts Professor X. The remaining X-Men end up in an uneasy alliance with Magneto to stop Stryker from using Cerebro to wipe out mutants worldwide, while the White House opening gives Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler his introduction. Cumming is returning as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, which makes this chapter matter even more now.
The third pick is X-Men: The Last Stand, built around a permanent mutant cure that divides the community. Jean Grey returns as the dangerously powerful Phoenix and joins Magneto’s war against humanity, and the film also introduces Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, who is returning in Avengers: Doomsday. That alone makes it one of the most important stops on the road to the new crossover.
Days of Future Past shifts the story into a dystopian future where Sentinels are hunting mutants to extinction, then sends Wolverine back to 1973 to stop Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask. He has to reunite the younger Xavier and Magneto, which gives the film a broad sweep across the franchise’s history and helps explain why it is part of the essential five.
The most direct bridge, though, is Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool recruits a troubled Logan variant after discovering that his timeline is collapsing following Wolverine’s death, then the two are trapped in the Void and face Cassandra Nova. The film also gives Channing Tatum his long-awaited debut as Gambit, and Tatum is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday. Even so, the piece still puts earlier X-Men films on the list because the bridge alone does not explain everything that is coming.
That is the catch for anyone hoping one movie will do all the work: Deadpool & Wolverine may connect Fox’s mutant universe to the MCU most clearly, but the five-film list is built to cover the deeper history behind the return of characters like Nightcrawler, Beast and Professor X. If you only have time for one, it is the clearest bridge; if you want the full picture before December 18, the safest answer is to start at the beginning and keep going.
