Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs from the 2021-2026 model years after finding that an engine-compartment wiring harness may short-circuit and start a fire. The repair will be made by dealers, who will add convolute sheathing with abrasion tape to reduce chafing.
The move is drawing attention now because dealer notifications have already begun and Ford planned to notify owners between August 24 and August 28. Owners of the affected SUVs can also check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to see whether their vehicle is included.
The problem centers on insufficient abrasion protection around the wiring harness in the engine compartment. If the harness moves against nearby parts, internal wires can be exposed, short intermittently and create arcs that may lead to a fire in the engine bay. In some cases, drivers may see smoke coming from the cabin air vents or get a warning message on the cluster before the situation gets worse.
Ford said it was aware of 15 incidents involving a fire that may have started with the engine compartment wiring harness when it filed the recall paperwork. That number matters, but it does not settle the question many owners will want answered first: how many of the 565,691 recalled vehicles have actually shown the defect, and how many of those 15 incidents were confirmed fires. The paperwork points to a risk, not a full accounting of every failure.
The recall covers Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs, and the fix is straightforward if not trivial. Dealer technicians will fit the wiring harness with convolute sheathing and abrasion tape to keep it from wearing against nearby parts and to cut the odds of another short circuit. For owners, the practical step now is to watch for the notice window and check whether their SUV is included, because the risk Ford is trying to head off sits inside the engine bay and can escalate fast.
