Phoenix Cyclops is joining MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as the first additional character in Year 1 content, giving the 2.5D fighter its first post-launch roster expansion. Takeshi Yamanaka, the game’s producer, made the announcement in a San Diego Comic-Con recap and said the character will be voiced by Ray Chase.
The reveal matters because it confirms the game is not stopping at launch content. Players of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will also get Wolverine Battle Reborn Suit at no additional cost starting September 1st, a separate giveaway that adds more value for anyone already in the game and gives newcomers another reason to keep watching the rollout.
Yamanaka said this version of Cyclops takes inspiration from his Phoenix Five incarnation in Avengers vs. X-Men, with a new look built around the Phoenix Force. He described the character as carrying powerful Optic Blasts and strong hand-to-hand combat, which points to a fighter designed to be more than a simple ranged attacker. That is enough to frame the character, but not enough to show how he will actually play.
That detail is still being held back. Yamanaka said more will come later about how those abilities are built into Phoenix Cyclops’s gameplay, which means the headline reveal is ahead of the mechanical breakdown. For players, that leaves the most important question open: whether the new character will play like the aggressive, close-range version implied by the description or lean harder on his long-range beam attacks.
The rest of the recap helped fill in the world around the announcement. The opening movie and the cinematic sequences in Episode Mode were produced by Sanzigen, while the opening theme pairs Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA with mayu of NEMOPHILA. Kanata Okajima wrote the lyrics, MEG handled composition and arrangement, and Daisuke Suzuki of Sanzigen directed the animation. Yamanaka said the team wanted the opening to blend classic fighting game intros with anime openings from the early 2000s, and that same approach now seems to be carrying into the game’s post-launch plan: give players a clear reveal first, then bring the fighting style later.
