Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new Gundam anime set for 2027 and built inside a fresh continuity called After Apocalypse. The series will follow Gundam Zero pilot Ray Azumi, a war orphan whose parents died during an apocalyptic event.

The announcement at San Diego Comic-Con is drawing attention now because it does more than add another title to the franchise. It puts a new story on a fixed release path and places it beside Gundam Rogue Orbit in one shared world, with the anime set 100 years earlier than the game and still meant to feel like part of the same narrative line.

That shared line begins with a world that changed after the discovery of the Autonomous Interstellar Object. Its three revelations — Gravity Control, FTL Communication, and Cognitive Materialization — drove an age of prosperity and pushed humanity across the solar system. Then the object ran wild in less than ten years, spawned an aggressive ecosystem, and turned into what people came to call the Apocalypse. Humanity fought that threat to a standstill in orbit above Earth for three months, abandoned Earth, and marked that year as A.A. 1.

By A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in space colonies had never known life without the Apocalypse, which is the kind of setting Kamiyama appears to be building from the ground up. He is best known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and has also directed Eden of the East, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and The Ninth Jedi short from Star Wars: Visions. Toh EnJoe, known for Self-Reference Engine and Harlequin Butterfly, contributed to the worldbuilding.

Kamiyama has said he wanted to ask what would replace the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, what would become of the Newtype concept, and what would happen to Minovsky particles in a new Gundam era. He also described the project as a chance to create his own Gundam from the ground up, a process that led to Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO taking shape as a fresh take rather than a retread.

The open question is how that fresh take will stay linked to Gundam Rogue Orbit without collapsing the distance between them. The anime comes first in the timeline, but the game sits a century later inside the same continuous world, which means the new continuity has to work both as a beginning and as a foundation for what follows. Sola Animation will handle production, and the series is now headed toward 2027 with its chronology already doing as much talking as its title.
