Atlanta United will go into Wednesday night’s match against Charlotte FC with Júnior Alonso available, Stian Gregersen back on the availability list and several other players missing, a shift that could reshape the back line for the 8 p.m. ET kickoff. The club’s latest availability update also leaves Pedro Amador, Jay Fortune, Matt Edwards, Sergio Santos and Paulo Díaz unavailable or limited in different ways as Atlanta United tries to manage a thin roster.
The matchup matters now because it comes only days after the 5-Stripes lost at Nashville, and because these two teams already met on April 28, when Atlanta United beat Charlotte FC 2-0 in the U.S. Open Cup. Tristan Muyumba said after training Tuesday that the second meeting will feel different, and he is likely right: Charlotte’s lineup looked a lot different in that earlier game at Mecklenburg Sportsplex in Matthews, North Carolina, than it is expected to on Wednesday night.
The return of Alonso is the biggest immediate change. Muyumba said Alonso brings leadership and calm to the defense, and the defender’s path to Atlanta explains why. He was playing at Atlético Mineiro under Gabriel Milito and Eduardo Domínguez in a similar style before joining Atlanta United, and Muyumba said Alonso even spoke a little French because he spent a couple of years in France. Gregersen’s availability adds another option in central defense, which gives Atlanta United more flexibility if Martino wants to protect a lineup already being pressed by absences. The coach said Tuesday that the team’s attitude will not change despite recent losses, and he kept returning to the same point: the standard stays the same even when the results do not. That matters because Atlanta United is trying to steady itself without turning a rivalry game into a rerun of the last one.
There is still a complication inside the good news. Jay Fortune is expected to miss three-to-four weeks after the hamstring injury he picked up Friday night, while Matt Edwards is day-to-day with a hamstring knock and Sergio Santos remains in rehab for a calf injury. Paulo Díaz is still tied up in visa logistics, which leaves the lineup picture unsettled even with Alonso cleared and Gregersen available. Cooper Sanchez, who is 18, is another name to watch, though his role remains to be seen.
