Paul Wesley says the early Paul Wesley Nina Dobrev feud is long over. On the Wednesday, July 22 episode of Call Her Daddy, he said he and Nina Dobrev did not get along in the beginning, but are now such good friends that he absolutely adores her.

That shift matters now because Wesley and Dobrev are about to work together again in the upcoming Hulu thriller You Deserve to Know. The timing gives his remarks a sharper edge: the relationship that once started with friction is now part of the story around their return to the screen.

Wesley, 43, and Dobrev, 37, spent years talking about finding the right project before this one finally came together. He said their back-and-forth over the years never quite landed until You Deserve to Know, which suggests the reunion was less a quick reunion offer than a long search for the right fit.

He also made clear that the new project is not trying to replay what made them famous. Wesley said he and Dobrev did not want to recreate their Stelena dynamic from The Vampire Diaries, where they played Stefan Salvatore and Elena Gilbert from 2009 to 2017. He said Stefan and Elena are so iconic and so perfect that he and Dobrev did not want a comparison.

That is the part that gives the reunion its real weight. On the old series, the pair’s chemistry defined one of the show’s most recognizable relationships, but Wesley’s comments show that the off-screen story has moved somewhere different. Both actors have been open about the early friction, and the fact that they can now talk about it without strain says as much about the passage of time as it does about the project itself.

In You Deserve to Know, Dobrev plays a woman whose husband is murdered, and Wesley is one of the key suspects. So the next question is not whether the two can share a screen again. They already can. It is whether their reunion can stand on its own, without leaning on the old Stefan and Elena connection that once made them famous.
