Lionsgate has unveiled a new La La Land poster for the film’s 10th anniversary, and the change is the kind fans will notice immediately: Ryan Gosling’s hand position is different. The revised image revisits one of the most recognizable movie posters of the last decade by correcting the gesture Gosling has openly regretted for years.
That is why the poster is drawing attention now. The rerelease of the Oscar-winning film is set for Sunday, August 16, and Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres will play it that day, turning the anniversary artwork into part of a broader return to the screen. For viewers who still associate La La Land with its original image, the new version is a reminder that even a single pose can become part of a film’s lasting identity.
Gosling had already told The in a 2024 interview that the image bothered him. “There is a moment that haunts me,” he said, describing the dance still that ended up as the poster. He explained that he and Emma Stone were supposed to have their hands up, but he chose to make his hand flatter because he thought it looked cooler, even though people around him disagreed. Looking back, he said he now has to see it all the time and knows the intended pose would have been better. “It just killed the energy that way,” he said. “I call it La La Hand.”
That complaint lands differently now because the new anniversary poster does what his remarks never could: it changes the pose. Lionsgate has not said the update is being applied to every piece of rerelease marketing, and that leaves the safest reading as the most literal one — this is a commemorative poster tied to the 10th anniversary, not proof that every display will be replaced. La La Land, written and directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Gosling and Stone as dream-chasing lovers in Los Angeles, won six Oscars, including Best Director and Best Cinematography. The updated artwork gives the film a small but telling correction before it returns to theaters, and for Gosling, it finally takes some of the sting out of a poster he has been unable to stop seeing.
