Jordan Walker’s Home Run Derby win on Monday in Philadelphia gave St. Louis a brighter moment, but the bigger number for this game is Leahy’s split: a 2.94 ERA in St. Louis compared with a 4.69 road ERA.
Leahy has still put together a 7-4 record, a 3.73 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP, but the road work has been less steady. The Cardinals are 0-for-9 against him, which is part of why the early innings look attractive for St. Louis rather than a full-game chase.
Soriano has been the more dependable side of the Angels’ season at 8-6 with a 3.49 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. He usually gives them two or three runs over five or six innings, which is good enough to keep a game close but not always enough to carry a club that has spent most of the year trying to survive the standings rather than climb them.
That is the friction inside the bet. The Cardinals are still in a race that could be decided by a few weeks of clean baseball, but Leahy’s numbers away from St. Louis have been materially worse than they are at home. A team trying to stay in the Wild Card picture can live with that split only if its offense shows up early, and the Cardinals have not exactly solved Soriano before, going 1-for-5 against him.
The broader picture is simple enough. St. Louis can still play its way deeper into the second half if it keeps stacking wins, while Los Angeles looks like a club that may need a complete rebuild. The Cardinals also have a decision ahead around the deadline: add pitching or stand pat and trust the current roster. For tonight, though, the cleaner read is the one on the board — the Cardinals have the better early path if Leahy handles his home assignment and Soriano stays in his usual range.
