Khristian Curtis did not enter the majors as a starter. He arrived in bulk relief behind Mason Montgomery in Cleveland on Saturday and still left with something a debut often does not give a pitcher: five scoreless innings, 68 pitches and a clean line that ended with no decision.
For the Pirates, that was the point. Curtis, a 24-year-old 2023 12th-round pick, gave them a first look at a arm with real miss-the-bat stuff. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four, and his fastball sat at 95-plus mph with 17-18 inches of induced vertical break. He also mixed in a 92 mph cutter, along with a changeup, slider and curveball, and finished with eight whiffs and a 28% called-strike plus whiff rate.
That kind of first impression matters because the results in the minors were less polished. Curtis posted a 4.96 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP between Double-A and Triple-A this year, with a 30% strikeout rate and a 12% walk rate across 18 appearances. The strikeout ability is obvious. The command is not as steady, and that is the piece that can keep his best outings from showing up every fifth day.
The way Pittsburgh used him also says plenty. The club already has a five-man rotation, so a traditional starting job was never there for him to grab on Saturday. Working behind Montgomery let the Pirates test Curtis without forcing him into a role the roster does not currently have open, and it gave them a major league read on his fastball and cutter, which have been his best pitches so far.
That leaves Curtis in the familiar place many young pitchers find themselves after a strong debut: intriguing enough to keep watching, not yet secure enough to know when the next chance will come. Injuries or trades could open a door later, but for now his first big league outing mostly confirmed the shape of the scouting report. The stuff is good enough to matter. The command will decide how often it does.
