The Cleveland Cavaliers would not be about to turn away a LeBron James reunion if he wanted to wrap up his career in Ohio. But the basketball question is not whether Cleveland would welcome him back. It is whether the fit would hold up long enough to matter.
That is why Cavaliers news around a possible return keeps circling the same two issues: who would control the rock and whether Kenny Atkinson could balance the lineups to keep enough shooting on the floor with regularity. A lineup built around LeBron James, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen would create a hard offensive puzzle before the defense is even considered.
The defensive problem is where the idea starts to break down. The Cavaliers would face an awkward fit on that end if those five shared the floor, because the group would have an uphill battle defending the perimeter. None of LeBron James, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden is a strong choice to serve as Cleveland's primary point of attack defender, which leaves the burden on a team already stretched thin by the spacing demands of the same lineup.
That matters because Cleveland was already one of the worst teams at defending the 3-point shot last season. In 2025-26, the Cavaliers gave up 37.2 percent from beyond the arc, tied for 26th in the NBA, and allowed 14.2 opponent 3-point field goals made, also tied for 26th. Put another perimeter-heavy group in front of that kind of record, and the weakness does not disappear. It gets easier to find.
Running James Harden, Donovan Mitchell and LeBron James together for significant stretches would invite those problems to continue in Cleveland, and the defense would collapse in a heartbeat without a clear point of attack stopper among the three perimeter stars. That is the tradeoff in any reunion talk: the Cavaliers would gain a familiar star, but they would also be taking on a lineup structure that does not solve the flaw that already hurt them most. Whether LeBron James actually returns remains the unanswered part. The fit question is already loud enough.
