Le'Veon Bell was jailed on July 20 in the Stark County Jail over child support payments, one day after Jackson Township police arrested him on a warrant out of Michigan. The former NFL star is now being held on a courtesy hold for another agency, according to his inmate listing.
The timing turned a routine court dispute into a public scene because Bell had appeared earlier on July 19 at Belden Village Mall in Jackson Township for a meet-and-greet event. By the next day, the former running back was in jail, and the question was no longer whether the warrant existed, but why it had reached this point while he was in the middle of a public appearance.
Thomas Shaffer, Bell's attorney, said the child support case is being built on income figures that do not match Bell's current life. Shaffer said Bell has a child in Michigan and is being assessed based on the salary he earned when he played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, even though Bell has not played in the NFL since 2021 and later suited up for the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers that year.
Shaffer said Bell cashed in an NFL pension six months ago to pay $50,000 in child support for that child, but the calculation still relies on older earnings and even on his professional boxing career. He called the process inaccurate and said Bell keeps getting pulled back into the same fight because the numbers used against him do not reflect what he actually earns now.
That is where the case gets messy. Because of the financial threshold, the Michigan Attorney General's Office is involved, Shaffer said, and Bell's legal fight appears to be less about one missed payment than about how his income is defined in the first place. His attorney put it bluntly: this is a revolving door, the issue will never end, and the court needs to reflect his true income.
For now, the immediate consequence is straightforward: Bell is in custody in Stark County while the Michigan case runs through the system. What happens next depends on whether the support calculation is changed, but the central dispute is already clear — a former star says he paid, a lawyer says the math is wrong, and the warrant has already turned that argument into jail time.
