By the end of House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5, Daemon Targaryen understands that Ormund Hightower is no longer just a distant threat. He sees, in bloody fashion, that Ormund’s campaign is meant to break Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s side from the inside, and that the killing of Luthor Largent is part of it.
That is why the episode is drawing attention now. Matt Smith said Daemon wants to reclaim his kingdom on behalf of his wife, and that makes the loss of support around him feel personal as well as tactical. Luthor is the commander of the City Watch, so his brutal murder at the end of the hour lands as more than one death; it takes a direct hit at the people Daemon has relied on, including the Gold Cloaks he has long felt an affinity for.
Ormund’s move is not just about putting one claimant ahead of another. In the episode, he adds Daeron Targaryen’s face to currency and kills members of the Gold Cloaks, a show of reach that also works as propaganda. The goal is clear: get Daeron on the Iron Throne instead of Rhaenyra, and make resistance feel costly. Ryan Condal said Daemon is left feeling “rather impotent,” because he can chase faceless villains in the city but still cannot reach the real one, who is 60 leagues away.
That distance matters because it exposes the limit of Daemon’s response. He can strike back at the street level, but he cannot yet touch Ormund himself, and Condal said Rhaenyra and Daemon do not know how to wage combat against him. The strategy is built to leave them frustrated, maybe even bait them into a mistake, while making people afraid to defend Rhaenyra in the first place.
Philippa Goslett pushed that point further. She said Ormund genuinely loves Daeron, but also needs to control every move he makes. In other words, the affection and the leash are part of the same plan. If Aegon and Aemond cannot be found, Ormund still has Daeron, and that makes him dangerous enough to keep destabilizing Rhaenyra’s reign for as long as he can.
What Daemon sees at the end of the hour is not a single killing but a pattern. Ormund has turned loyalty into fear, and the next test is whether Daemon and Rhaenyra can answer a foe who is close enough to wound them and far enough away to stay out of reach.
