Warner Bros. has pushed Digger back into view with new World Cup videos, turning Tom Cruise’s oil tycoon Digger Rockwell into the face of the film’s latest promotion as the release date draws near. The movie is set to hit theaters on October 2.
That timing is why the character is suddenly being searched again. Cruise plays Rockwell in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and the campaign is leaning on the same swagger that has defined the role from the start. In the videos, Rockwell talks like a man who has never met a game he intended to leave undecided, saying, “For me, Digger, I play with a much, much bigger ball, and I don't play just to win. I play to dominate.”
The push also makes clear why Warner Bros. chose the World Cup as the backdrop. Rockwell is being sold as the most powerful man in the world, and the footage is cut to make him look like he controls every move. But the polish tells its own story. It is abundantly clear that Digger is not actually hitting all those perfect moves himself, which leaves the videos feeling less like a sports showcase than a carefully built illusion around a character Cruise spent days listening to Iñárritu read him into. Cruise, who rarely uses extensive makeup and prosthetics, did so here to become Rockwell, and the transformation is part of the draw as much as the football-style gloss.
That is what gives the campaign its edge: Warner Bros. is not just advertising a movie, it is extending the movie’s persona into one of the biggest sports moments on the calendar. A first Digger video went out a couple of days earlier, and the newer clips deepen the same pitch — power, dominance and spectacle — even as the craft behind the footage stays hidden. J.J. Abrams has already praised Digger after seeing it, which only adds to the sense that the studio is betting on Cruise’s transformation to carry the film before audiences can judge it for themselves. For now, the marketing answer is simple. Digger is coming on October 2, and Warner Bros. wants the World Cup to help people remember it.
