The closure began around 8:30 pm local time after Washington State Patrol troopers and Pierce County first responders received reports of a person in crisis on the bridge. Law enforcement shut down all eastbound lanes right away so emergency personnel could manage the situation safely.
By the latest update, the shutdown was still in place. The bridge remained a live scene, not a traffic delay that had been sorted out and cleared, and officials said the response involved firearms even though no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
Trooper Kameron Watts said negotiations remain active and that the situation requires a significant law enforcement presence. That leaves eastbound travelers waiting for a reopening that has not been timed and a bridge corridor still under pressure as the night wears on.
