Disney’s Descendants: Wicked Wonderland added a new royal wrinkle on Tuesday night when it premiered in Los Angeles and introduced Pink, Red’s sister, to the franchise. The fifth film in the Descendants series brings back familiar faces while widening the world around the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella.
The timing matters because the movie reaches viewers quickly: it premieres Thursday, July 16 on Disney Channel and begins streaming Friday on Disney+. That gives fans little gap between the premiere and the chance to see how the story expands the family ties at the center of the series.
Kylie Cantrall returns as Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, while Malia Baker is back as Chloe Charming, Cinderella’s child. Rita Ora returns as the Queen of Hearts and Brandy Norwood is back as Cinderella, with Leonardo Nam portraying Maddox Hatter and Kiara Romero playing Hazel Hook. Liamani Segura plays Pink, and she described the character as “very bubbly, over-the-top, extremely glittery and sparkly. She’s just magic,” which is exactly the kind of entrance that pushes the film beyond a simple family reunion.
That larger cast also makes room for a story that leans into both sides of the classic divide. The film includes heroes and villains, but Romero said what makes the franchise work is that villains “aren’t so villainous,” and that they may think they are, “but, yeah, not really.” In other words, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is not just stacking good characters against bad ones; it is blurring the line between them while still keeping the music and dance that define the series.
For Disney, the result is a fifth installment that does what the franchise has always done best: it keeps the descendants of Disney heroes and villains in the same frame, then gives the next chapter a new figure to chase. Pink is the newest piece of that puzzle, and the story now moves from the Los Angeles premiere to the screen on Thursday and then to streaming the next day.
