Madewell recalled two styles of women’s sweaters after one report that a sweater caught fire, putting light blue and cream pullovers and cardigans sold in sizes XS through L under an immediate stop-use warning. The Madewell Tj Maxx sweater recall affects the Double V-Neck Pullover and V-Neck Cardigan, both long-sleeved V-neck styles sold with or without buttons.
The recall matters now because the sweaters have been linked to a burn hazard serious enough to trigger a federal notice, and consumers are being told not to wait for a replacement or wear the items again. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, and the sweaters were sold before the action was announced.
The identification is built into the garment itself. “Madewell” and the size are printed on the neck label, while “Style #NT611” or “Style #NT612” and “HO24” appear on the sewn-in side seam label. That makes it easier for shoppers to check whether they have one of the recalled pieces even if the sweater was bought some time ago.
The part that does not fit the cleanest version of a recall notice is also the most important one: no injuries have been reported. Even so, the firm has already received one report of the sweater catching on fire, which is enough to show the risk is not theoretical. Under the mandatory clothing textile standard, the garments were recalled for violating the rule that is meant to keep apparel from creating a fire danger, a defect that can be especially serious in loose, long-sleeved knitwear.
Consumers who have the recalled sweaters are being offered a full refund in the original form of payment or store credit. Before that happens, they are being asked to destroy the sweaters by cutting them in half, send a photo of the destroyed product to [email protected], and then dispose of it.
