Tomorrowland 2026 opened its first festival weekend in De Schorre in Boom with the unveiling of a new Mainstage, setting the tone for a festival that had to rebuild after last year’s fire. For the first time, visitors also found a place to slow down in the Maria Magdalenakerk in Reet, while Frank Verstraeten stepped on the lineup as a DJ for the first time.
The opening mattered because the new stage is the clearest sign that Tomorrowland is moving forward at full scale, even with the memory of the fire still hanging over the event. Verstraeten, who has supplied all the LED screens since the very first edition, said the insurance file after the blaze, in which much of his material burned, is still not settled and could take 10 years to close.
That long shadow sits beside the festival’s public reset. Amber Broos and Joeri Broos also played a back-to-back set at the House of Fortune for the first time, scheduled from 17 to 18 uur, giving the opening day more than one reason to draw a crowd. The program also leans into Tomorrowland’s Consciencia theme, built around six oer-emoties that divide the six festival days.
The same festival has also had to absorb criticism outside Boom. Two days after six people died in a fire near the Oxy-gebouw, Tomorrowland held a pop-upevent with a DJ on the Muntplein in Brussel. Debby Wilmsen said the reaction was understood, stressed that it was not a party but an activity with musical experience, and said one minute of silence was held. That contrast — celebration on one side, recent loss on the other — is now part of the story Tomorrowland is trying to tell.
For Geert Van Gucht and An Van der Auwera, who walked to Tomorrowland for the 20e keer today and have never missed an edition, the festival still begins with loyalty more than spectacle. Van Gucht said, “Het was er van in het begin boenk op en we zijn blijven gaan.” The answer that remains is whether the new Mainstage and the softer spaces around it are enough to carry Tomorrowland through a season that is still being measured against fire, recovery and scrutiny.
