The Columbus Crew acquired Eric Bailly on July 17, 2026, adding a veteran defender on a guaranteed contract that runs through June 2027. The move gives the Crew an experienced center back for the stretch run and beyond, while also tying up an international roster slot.

That is why Bailly is drawing attention now. He most recently played for Real Oviedo and arrives with 12 seasons of experience across La Liga and the English Premier League, a resume that includes time with Villarreal CF, Manchester United FC, Olympique de Marseille and Beşiktaş. His contract also includes club options for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 MLS campaigns, giving Columbus a longer runway if the fit works.

Issa Tall said the club is excited to welcome Bailly to Columbus and pointed to his experience at the highest levels of the game, along with his defensive quality, leadership and composure. Tall also said Bailly brings a winning mentality and valuable experience that will help the group on and off the field, and that the club looks forward to integrating him as it continues pushing toward its goals in the second half of the season.

There is one catch before any of that becomes visible on the field. Bailly cannot officially join the Crew roster until the club receives his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa, so the signing is complete in principle but not yet in roster terms. When that paperwork clears, Columbus will have to decide how quickly to fold him into a back line that now has a new voice, new experience and one fewer open international spot.

For the Crew, the deal is as much about timing as it is about talent. Bailly’s record includes a UEFA Europa League title, an EFL Cup and an FA Community Shield, but his first immediate value in Columbus will be measured by how soon he can be registered and how well he fits into the club’s plans for the rest of the season.
