An Air Quality Alert was in effect for all of Ohio on Friday as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted across the state, leaving the air unhealthy for sensitive groups. In Columbus, the day’s conditions were tied to that smoke, even as the air was expected to improve later Friday and into Friday night.
That is why people were checking the Air Quality Index Columbus, Ohio early Friday: the warning covered the whole state, and the concern was not abstract. High levels of smoke particulates were the problem, and that made outdoor time riskier for people in Ohio who are more vulnerable to poor air, especially those with breathing problems or other sensitivities.
The timing mattered because the forecast also called for a hot, unsettled stretch. Columbus was expected to reach around 91 on Friday with a 40% chance of rain, while Saturday was forecast to be a little less smoky but still unsettled, with a 70% chance of rain and a high near 90. Sunday and Monday were expected to turn dry and warm, with partly cloudy skies and highs around 85 and 88, before more rain returned Tuesday with a high around 86 and a 60% chance of rain.
The smoke was not coming from a local source. It was drifting in from Canadian wildfires, and that left a gap between how the day felt early Friday and how it was expected to change by nightfall. The air was already described as unhealthy, but the same forecast said the smoke should start clearing later Friday and through Friday night, which meant the state alert was a same-day problem rather than a long-running stretch of haze.
Even then, the broader week still had weather that could complicate recovery. Cooler overnight lows around 60 were expected later next week, with Wednesday and Thursday both forecast to bring partly cloudy skies and highs around 80. For now, the clearest answer for Columbus is that Friday’s alert was about smoke, the risk was highest for sensitive groups, and the air should ease as the day goes on.
