A July 15 post on X said Cooper Hoffman is the top choice to play Cyclops in the MCU X-Men reboot, putting the 23-year-old actor at the center of the latest casting rumor around Marvel Studios' next mutant lineup.
The timing is why the post spread fast. Hoffman, the son of late Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, has already built a profile that makes the rumor easy to believe: he debuted in Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza, drew a Golden Globe nomination for it, and most recently played Ray Garraty in Francis Lawrence's The Long Walk.
That last film gave Hoffman another push. The adaptation of Stephen King's 1979 novel grossed $63 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, held an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and brought Hoffman the Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award for his performance. With that kind of momentum, a reported lead in the X-Men reboot reads less like a random fan pick and more like a plausible next step.
Even so, Marvel Studios has not confirmed any casting for the X-Men reboot, which is the part that matters most. The studio has not set an official release date either, so the July 15 post remains exactly what it was when it appeared: a scoop, not an announcement. Other scoopers had previously linked Harris Dickinson and Jack Champion to Cyclops, but the new report puts Hoffman first.
The film itself is being shaped around the original comic book lineup, with Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman expected to anchor the reboot. Jake Schreier is directing after Thunderbolts*, while Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are writing a new draft of Michael Lesslie's original script. Hoffman also has several projects in motion, including Hulu's Durango and Luca Guadagnino's Artificial and The Chaperones, which means the casting chatter is landing as his schedule keeps filling up.
For now, the question is not whether Hoffman fits the role. It is whether Marvel Studios turns the rumor into the first official X-Men casting, or lets the speculation keep running until the studio is ready to speak for itself.
