Gurnoor Brar was warned and handed one demerit point after breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ODI series opener against England in Birmingham. The incident came in the eighth over of England’s innings, when Brar picked up the ball while fielding and threw it towards the batter in what match officials judged to be an inappropriate and dangerous manner.
The ruling matters now because it puts a formal disciplinary mark against Brar’s name while India and England are still in the middle of a three-match series. Under the ICC system, one demerit point stays on a player’s record for 24 months, and this breach counts as Brar’s first offence in that period.
Brar admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing. That did not prevent the charge from being treated as a proper breach. Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can rise to as much as 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, with one or two demerit points attached depending on the case.
The charge was levelled by the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, along with third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth official Russell Warren. The case was handled under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and or dangerous manner during an international match.
India later went on to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with a six-wicket win over the hosts, and Brar also contributed two wickets.
