The first trailer for The Uprising has arrived, giving Andrew Garfield his first look as the leader of a violent rebellion against King Richard II. The film, from Paul Greengrass, is now moving toward a theatrical release on September 11, 2026.
That matters because the trailer is the first public proof of where the project has landed after a long, shifting development path. It was once known as The Hood, then The Rage, before settling on The Uprising, and Garfield had boarded by late last year when the official title was confirmed.
In the footage, Garfield’s character pushes commoners into revolt as war burns across England, with the rebellion framed as a fight for survival and equality. The synopsis says he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might, and the trailer leans hard into that idea, showing a broad uprising built from fear, anger and the need to live through the 14th century.
The project did not arrive here in a straight line. Benedict Cumberbatch was once set to feature in the lead role, and Matthew McConaughey was later attached when the film was still called The Rage before Garfield took over. That change gives the trailer extra weight, because it confirms not just the film’s tone but the version of the story that will actually reach theaters.
Greengrass, whose work on Bourne, Captain Phillips and The Lost Bus made him a staple of propulsive action filmmaking, is making his first film set before the 20th century. He writes and directs here, with Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston and Sky Yang also in the cast.
For Garfield, the trailer arrives as a pivot point between projects. He will next be seen in Artificial as OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, but for now The Uprising is the part that grabs attention: a rebellion story built around one man, one crown and one fight that the trailer says is already in motion.
