John Fetterman said Wednesday he would leave the Democratic Party if it ever officially became anti-Israel, drawing a hard line around the issue that has put him at odds with some of his own allies. Speaking at the Hill Nation Summit in Washington, he said that crossing that line would be a moral certainty for him.
The warning came as Fetterman said he is growing more uneasy with what he sees as a shift inside the party. He said the party is moving away from its traditional support for Israel and becoming more hostile toward people who back it, a change he tied to the rising influence of more left-wing and radical factions.
He pointed to a series of recent signs that, in his view, show the party drifting. One was growing support among Democrats for Thomas Massie's proposal to eliminate about $3.3 billion in annual security aid to Israel. Hakeem Jeffries opposed the proposal, but Katherine Clark supported it, a split that underscores how sharply divided Democratic leaders have become on the issue.
Fetterman also cited recent Democratic primary victories by candidates who took strongly critical positions toward the Jewish state as another reason for alarm. In his telling, those wins are not isolated cases but evidence that the party is becoming increasingly anti-Israel at the same time it is becoming less welcoming to supporters of Israel.
That is why his comments matter now. They do not amount to an immediate break, but they set out a clear condition for one: if the party formalizes an anti-Israel position, Fetterman says he is done. The open question is whether Democratic leaders are heading toward any official change at all, or whether the divide he is describing will remain an internal fight rather than a party-defining rupture.
Fetterman’s unease goes beyond policy math. He said some Republicans have privately suggested he switch parties, but his criticism was aimed inward, including at Democrats who endorsed Graham Platner before allegations about his past conduct came to light. He singled out Bernie Sanders for backing Platner and said the campaign collapsed after a woman accused Platner of raping her in 2021.
