JoJo Siwa said she and Chris Hughes do not talk about being trolled, choosing instead to keep their relationship centered on positive, fun and loving conversations. She said there has been only one time she told him she was not good right now, and he was there for her.
The comment lands now because Siwa recently read an article in which Hughes praised the way she handles criticism, and she said that kind of public support matters to her even when they avoid negative talk with each other. She said hearing him defend her made her feel proud, while also reinforcing the boundary they have set around criticism.
Siwa, 23, said Hughes, 33, is supportive, but that the couple mostly sidestep online trolling rather than dissect it together. In her words, they protect themselves by keeping their conversations upbeat, and she said that approach means they only break the rule when one of them truly needs help.
That leaves one small contradiction at the center of how they handle public scrutiny: they avoid talking about the criticism directly, yet Siwa still notices and values when Hughes speaks up for her elsewhere. She said that public praise reassures her, even if the two of them rarely discuss the attacks themselves.
Hughes has described the long-distance relationship as less difficult than many people assume, saying they used to see each other every month before the last couple of months and can fly to see one another when time allows. Siwa also said they bring different kinds of knowledge to the relationship and are pretty equal when it comes to smarts, noting that he knows more about sports and horses while she has her own areas of expertise.
The next visible step for Siwa is Fox's new gameshow Nation's Dumbest, where she is set to appear after building a relationship that has stayed unusually private for two public figures who met on Celebrity Big Brother last year.
