Fox is launching Nation’s Dumbest tonight, with Jack Whitehall on hosting duty and 12 celebrities trying to get eliminated instead of win. The series flips the usual competition formula on its head: the faster contestants are knocked out, the better they are doing.
That odd setup is why dumbest nations is drawing attention now. Whitehall said the show is “the show that you don’t want to win” and described it as starting like a quiz format before sliding into chaos. He also said contestants want to get off it “as quickly and as efficiently as possible,” which is the opposite of almost every game show built for bragging rights.
The lineup gives the format its weight. Anthony Michael Hall, Jon Heder, Carmen Electra, Ice-T, Steve-O, JoJo Siwa, Elle King, Chase Huddy Hudson, Hilaria Baldwin, Dr. Drew, Matt Leinart and Andrew Yang are all in the cast, facing pop quizzes, fast-paced physical challenges and tests on regular school subjects. Whitehall said he had to wear many hats while hosting, calling himself part quiz master, part therapist and part circus ringmaster.
Siwa offered the clearest glimpse of how the show plays in practice. She said she was homeschooled her whole life and found the back-to-school idea fun, telling the room she was excited and that the concept made sense to her. Then she added the kind of line only this premise could produce: “God, you just sound stupid!”
The joke also points to the show’s built-in friction. Competitions usually reward the last person standing; this one rewards the first to leave, and the cast has to treat elimination like success. Whitehall said he was glad to host rather than compete, but also admitted it was a tough job because he had to torment the celebrities and, at times, felt cruel doing it.
Nation’s Dumbest premieres tonight on Fox and streams the next day on Hulu. What remains to be seen is not whether the contestants want out quickly, but how far the show can stretch that backward logic before the format itself becomes the star.
