Will Grier has retired, and the Panthers moved him to the reserve/retired list on Wednesday, removing a veteran quarterback option days before training camp begins next week. The change leaves Carolina with Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett and Haynes King as its three quarterbacks heading into camp.
Grier, 31, was originally a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2019 and appeared in two regular-season games for Carolina during his rookie season. He returned to Charlotte only three months ago on a one-year deal before the draft, a move that pointed to a brief second chapter with his hometown team. That chapter ended before it could reach training camp.
The timing matters because the Panthers are about to start a stretch that usually sorts out depth, practice reps and roles. With Grier gone, the team no longer has the extra experienced arm it had when he signed, and the quarterback work in camp will now be divided among three players rather than four.
What is not known is why Grier chose to step away now. He has also spent time with the Cowboys, Bengals, Patriots, Chargers and Eagles, but none of those stops changed the fact that his return to Charlotte was short-lived. The move also lands ahead of a busy August for the Panthers, who open against the Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 6, the same stage where Luke Kuechly will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
For Carolina, the immediate story is not nostalgia. It is roster math. The Panthers head into camp lighter at quarterback than they were a day earlier, and that leaves Young, Pickett and King to absorb the work while the team turns toward its first preseason game.
