Michael Weatherly says fans who knew Tony DiNozzo on NCIS should recognize the man in Tony & Ziva, but also see that he has changed. The one-season spin-off was released on DVD Tuesday, and Weatherly said the return to that world is meant to feel familiar without freezing Tony in the version viewers last saw more than a decade ago.
The timing matters because Weatherly discussed the project at New York Comic Con just as the DVD release put the spin-off back in front of fans who still follow Tony and Ziva. The series picks up with former agents Tony and Ziva after years away from the small screen, now raising their teen daughter Tali when a crisis forces their quiet life off course. For viewers wondering why the character is being revisited now, Weatherly also said he will return to NCIS for Season 24 next fall.
That return makes Tony & Ziva more than a nostalgia play. Weatherly said he was curious about how to come back and integrate what happened off camera, and he said the fan expectation is what drove the update in the first place. Tony and Ziva were last seen together on Season 11 of NCIS in 2011, and Weatherly left three years later in Season 13, leaving a gap that the new project has to bridge on its own terms.
Weatherly described Tony as softer in the parent-focused story, with jokes and movie references acting as defense mechanisms rather than just punch lines. He said Tony learned patience from Tali and from the hard work of putting himself second, while also acknowledging that Gibbs was a damaged father figure who taught Tony how to solve a crime and be lonely, but not how to love. That gives the character a different weight than the one fans remember, even if the instinct to hide behind humor is still there.
He put the challenge bluntly: going back into the Tony DiNozzo world, he said, feels like spelunking in a mine, where one wrong step could bring everything down. That is the pressure on both projects now. Tony & Ziva has to show the evolution Weatherly says is real, and his next NCIS appearance will test whether that older, bruised version of Tony can fit back into the franchise without losing what made him work in the first place.
