The NHL schedule release set the 2026-27 season to begin on Sept. 29, with the Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Florida Panthers in Raleigh at 5 p.m. ET on. The opening-night tripleheader also puts the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. ET on Sportsnet in Canada and the Edmonton Oilers against the Vancouver Canucks at 10 p.m. ET.
For the league, that first night is more than a date on a calendar. It gives 32 teams their first confirmed home openers, gives fans a national TV map for the start of the season and gives the Hurricanes a chance to raise their championship banner in front of Florida. It also puts the spotlight on Gavin McKenna, who could make his NHL debut for Toronto after the club selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
That Toronto game carries added weight because McKenna is not just a prospect on a roster. He is the player most likely to define the first week of the season if he reaches the lineup that night, and he would do it in one of the league’s oldest rivalries. Sportsnet’s doubleheader also opens with the Oilers and Canucks meeting under two new coaches, Mike Babcock in Edmonton and Manny Malhotra in Vancouver, which gives the night an extra layer of change beyond the usual ring of ceremonial start-of-season games.
The schedule release does not stop with opening night. TNT will open on Sept. 30 with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins visiting the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Los Angeles Kings at the Colorado Avalanche at 10 p.m. ET. The league also confirmed Alex Ovechkin’s 22nd home opener for the Washington Capitals on Oct. 7, Brady Tkachuk’s home debut for Florida against the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 10, and Matthew Schaefer and the New York Islanders’ home opener against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 3.
By Thursday, the rest of the 2026-27 NHL schedule will be unveiled, filling in the regular-season dates that turn this first wave of matchups into a full calendar. The special events already announced — including the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, the 2026 Global Series Finland, the 2026 Global Series Germany and the Discover NHL Winter Classic — show the league is using the release to stage its biggest nights early, while leaving the hardest part of the season, the grind between them, for the complete schedule.
