The Astros are finalizing a trade that would send Lance McCullers Jr. to the Brewers on July 15, a move that now only needs the rest of the paperwork to fall into place. McCullers has already agreed to waive his no-trade clause and has been told he is headed to Milwaukee.
The deal gives Houston a way to move on from a pitcher who is in the final season of a five-year, $85 million contract, while the Astros also pay down a portion of what is left. McCullers is carrying a $17 million salary this year, so even a partial payment means Houston is taking on real cost to complete the swap.
What makes the move notable is not just the contract math. McCullers has not pitched since May 13 because of a shoulder injury, but he had been on a minor league rehab stint since June 25 and had made three solid appearances. For a team that once expected him to anchor the rotation, the timing of this trade makes clear how far the relationship has shifted.
The no-trade clause and the shoulder injury give the deal an awkward edge. McCullers is still working back, and Houston is still willing to move him, which suggests the club is thinking more about payroll and roster flexibility than about waiting for him to prove he can stay on the mound again. He also has not been the same pitcher he was before his health problems piled up, with a 6.65 ERA across 94 2/3 innings dating back to last season.
Brewers and Astros are also including Colton Gordon in the trade, giving Milwaukee a controllable 27-year-old lefty who has already made his big league debut. Gordon has shown strong Triple-A production, though it has not yet carried over in the majors, which fits the kind of secondary piece that often appears when a larger salary move is being built around one headline name.
For Houston, the message is hard to miss. The Astros are getting out from under part of McCullers’ deal before the Aug. 3 deadline, and they are doing it while he is still on rehab and while the season is still in motion. That is the part of the story that matters most today: this is not a future possibility, but a trade that is being closed while both sides are still sorting out the final details.
