Anthony Mantha was still unsigned a week and a half into free agency on July 12, leaving the top scorer in the 2026 UFA class without a contract after a season that should have made him a quick catch. He turned in a career year with Pittsburgh, but the market has not moved the way a 33-goal, 64-point season usually would.
That is why his name remains in circulation now. In a free-agent class, the player with the most offense available tends to come off the board fast, often with a raise and a longer deal. Mantha, though, is still waiting, and the wait has become the story.
The numbers are strong enough to explain the attention. Mantha played 81 games for Pittsburgh in 2025-26 and finished with 33 goals, 31 assists and 64 points, his first 30-goal, 30-assist, 60-point season. He also met all of his games played bonuses after signing last summer for a $2.5MM guarantee plus $2MM in games played bonuses. For a winger who has spent much of his career trying to prove he can stay healthy and productive at the same time, it was the most convincing season he has ever put together.
His career before that helps explain why teams have not rushed. Mantha tore his ACL in November while playing for Calgary in 2024 after signing a one-year, $3.5MM contract, and his 2023-24 season had already been split between Washington and Vegas. Early in his career, he had a pair of 48-point seasons with Detroit, but since then his production has often come in stretches rather than over a full year. He now has 588 career games, 179 goals, 188 assists and 367 points, a record that shows real scoring touch but also enough interruption to keep clubs cautious.
That caution is the friction in the market. A player who just led the available UFA scorers would usually have a straightforward path to a longer commitment, yet Mantha appears to be caught between what he produced last season and what teams still believe they can count on. The decision ahead is simple to frame and hard to answer: whether he settles for a shorter-term deal or keeps waiting for the longer term he may still want.
