FBI agents were seen at Lindsey Graham’s home on Capitol Hill on Monday, with nearly 20 federal agents gathered outside the rowhouse and multiple agents going inside to take photographs after his death. The bureau did not appear to be removing items, and the visible presence of investigators turned a quiet question about a sudden death into a public scene.
By Tuesday, Donald Trump had already moved to dismiss the scrutiny. Speaking in the Oval Office, he said the FBI was wasting its time if it was investigating Graham’s death, even as federal agents were still involved and local authorities had not ruled out anything beyond caution.
That search is happening because Graham, 71, died Saturday night and the first medical finding pointed to aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Washington’s chief medical examiner said that was the preliminary result, but toxicology and other testing were still pending, which means the case is not closed even if the initial evidence points away from foul play.
Trump said he had reviewed the medical reports, had been briefed by his White House doctors and was one of the last people to speak to Graham, in a phone call the night he died. On Monday night, he told Newsmax he did not see “a lot of evil there” and said he thought Graham’s death was more likely tied to health problems than to conspiracy theories.
That stance runs straight against the reason investigators were still there. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was assisting local authorities, and two law enforcement sources familiar with the scene said agents were continuing the inquiry out of an abundance of caution because no new evidence had emerged since Saturday night to suggest foul play. In other words, the agents at the house were not chasing a dramatic breakthrough; they were checking what had to be checked before the facts could be ruled final.
The death also landed as Graham’s role in South Carolina was being filled in the Capitol Hill orbit he occupied for years. On Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham, his only sibling, to serve out the remainder of her late relative’s term. Graham had been one of Trump’s closest allies on Capitol Hill, had pushed for tougher sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow, and had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv the day before he died.
What comes next is narrow but important: investigators are still waiting on toxicology and other testing, and that work will determine whether the preliminary finding stands on its own or whether it needs to be revisited. For now, the public scene at the home has not produced evidence of foul play, only a more complete picture of how seriously the case is being handled.
