Enzo Amore says his first real WWE break came because John Cena paid attention when almost nobody else did. After a three-hour visit to WWE NXT, Cena told Amore he was the only thing that had caught his eye all day, then invited him to the ring for a dark segment that changed the rest of his early run.
Amore, who had joined WWE with no prior wrestling experience, said the moment mattered because it opened a door that had been shut until then. He was already in a developmental class alongside Charlotte Flair, Baron Corbin and Mojo Rawley, but the Cena invite turned him from another prospect into somebody the company wanted to see again.
The payoff came fast. Amore said he named Big Cass as his seven-foot-tall partner when he spoke with Cena, and with approval from Cena and Paul "Triple H" Levesque, Cass was brought into the spot. The two became fast friends at the WWE Performance Center, where Cass taught Amore in-ring skills and talking psychology. That pairing helped give Amore the footing he needed once the room started to listen.
Amore later said the dark segment worked because the crowd caught on to his promo immediately. He cut the promo on Cena, worked in the “S-A-W-F-T” catchphrase and watched the audience echo it back. That reaction led to a televised squash match on NXT shortly after, a promotion that came on the back of one successful segment and a lot of nerve.
But the path was not clean. Amore also said Bill DeMott buried him after his first ring appearance, which makes the Cena endorsement stand out even more. One man inside the system knocked him down after he got out of the ring; another saw enough in three hours to bring him back in front of everybody.
That is the part that still matters in July, years later, because Amore says Cena and Cass got him over and gave them the rub, while Triple H gave him the squash match that kept him moving. Amore and Big Cass reached WWE's main roster in the summer of 2016, and later teamed with Cena in a six-man tag bout at WWE Battleground in July. The unanswered piece is not whether the break was real. It is how much of it came from one sharp promo, and how much from Cena deciding, in the middle of a long day, that Amore was impossible to ignore.
