For Washington, the first game offered a few clear reasons to keep watching. AJ Dybantsa, Tre Johnson and Will Riley all stood out, and Jamir Watkins was the most disruptive defender on the floor, forcing Darryn Peterson into nine turnovers and a 6-18 shooting night. Seth Trimble logged 12 minutes and was not a problem, but beyond him the Wizards did not get much else from the rest of the rotation.
That matters because Washington has spent three straight seasons winning fewer than 20 games, so even in Summer League the bar is not complicated: show signs that the roster can produce more than one good stretch at a time. The Kings have a different look coming in. Emanuel Sharp scored 21 points off the bench in their opener, and Jonathan Mogbo and Dylan Cardwell were solid enough to give Sacramento more than one path to scoring.
The matchup also gives the Wizards a quick answer on whether their opener was a one-night burst or the start of something steadier. Against Utah, the headline plays came from individual effort and pressure. Against Sacramento, Washington will need that same edge to hold up when the game turns on possessions rather than highlights.
Darius Acuff Jr., who ranked sixth in YODA this year, adds another layer to the evaluation, because Summer League tends to reward the players who create value in small, repeatable ways. If Washington can carry over the energy Watkins brought at the point of attack and get more consistent help around its top performers, the game should tell a cleaner story than the opener did. If not, the Kings are the kind of team that can make that limitation obvious fast.
