Jackie Young angle sharpens as Caitlin Clark returns for Indiana vs Las Vegas Aces

Caitlin Clark is set to play Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces, but only for 20 to 25 minutes, a sign that Indiana is easing her back in after the back injury that kept her out of the first meeting. Stephanie White announced the plan Saturday, turning what had been an injury watch into a game-day decision with real consequences for both teams.

The announcement is landing now because Sunday brings the first meeting this season featuring Clark and A’ja Wilson, two players who can change the pace of a game almost by themselves. Wilson returned Thursday from a three-game absence because of a right ankle injury and responded with 32 points, 10 rebounds and her 130th career double-double in Las Vegas’ 88-80 victory over the Portland Fire.

Clark’s limit matters because it is far below the workload Indiana usually leans on. In 18 games this season, she is averaging 20.5 points, 7.9 assists and four rebounds while shooting nearly 46% from the field, so a 20- to 25-minute cap means she will be available for only a slice of her normal night. That is the tradeoff Indiana is making: getting its lead guard back while still protecting her after she missed three consecutive games and then sat out Thursday’s 92-89 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.

Her return also gives the matchup a different shape than the last time these teams met. Indiana won its first-ever game in Las Vegas last Sunday at T-Mobile Arena, has taken the last three meetings overall, and enters Sunday second in the Eastern Conference at 13-9. The Las Vegas Aces are second in the WNBA standings at 16-6, and they have gone 5-3 against the Fever since Clark entered the league in 2024, which is why the margin for error is small even before the minutes restriction is factored in.

The unanswered piece is not whether Clark will suit up; it is how much Indiana can get from her in a game that may turn late, when every possession carries more weight. If she looks close to her usual form inside that 20- to 25-minute window, Indiana gets a stronger version of itself at the right time. If not, the matchup becomes a test of how much the Fever can do while their biggest name is still being managed carefully.
