The pattern follows a stretch of hot weather that has already pushed London into uncomfortable territory. The UK recorded its eighth day at or above 34C in a calendar year on Thursday, July 9, beating the previous high of seven days set in 1976 and again in 2020. That kind of heat does two things at once: it makes a storm forecast feel like relief, and it puts extra strain on public services.
That strain has already been visible. Deputy Metropolitan Police commissioner Matt Jukes urged people to hold back on non-emergency calls, warning that officers were dealing with heavy demand as temperatures climbed. Adam Schwartz posted on X on June 23 that it was 3.45am in London and thunder had been rolling for almost two straight hours, calling it one of the biggest and longest storms he could remember in nearly 35 years in the city. Another resident said they were woken around 3:30am by what felt like the loudest clap of thunder they had ever known. The next storms may not be that severe, but the forecast now leaves little doubt that storm clouds are returning over London, and they are arriving just as the heat still hangs over the city.
