Netflix’s new Little House on the Prairie adaptation has a road map now. Rebecca Sonnenshine said the series will move book by book after its July 9, 2026 premiere, and the first season is already setting up where the story goes next.
That matters because viewers of the Netflix version are not watching a one-off retelling. Alice Halsey stars as Laura, Skywalker Hughes plays Mary, and Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald play Pa and Ma Ingalls, with the project built to unfold in stages rather than as a single closed chapter. Sonnenshine said, “We’re gonna go book by book,” which gives the show a structure that fits the source material and leaves room for Charles Ingalls to remain part of the conversation as the adaptation grows.
The series is drawing from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, and Sonnenshine said the first season largely follows Little House on the Prairie while also folding in key parts of Little House in the Big Woods. That is the reason the show has already drawn attention: it is trying to honor an entire literary sequence while still building a television season that can hold together on its own. Sonnenshine also said she read Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, along with Wilder’s own books, essays and columns, to shape the adaptation’s tone and direction.
The wrinkle is that the showrunner did not begin with Little House in the Big Woods, even though she said she will reference it often. She called the book “incredibly episodic,” said there is “no real story,” and noted that the girls are “very, very young,” leaving too little material for a full season of television. In her view, Big Woods works better as a source of detail and emotional texture than as the backbone of an episode run, which is why the premiere starts later in the chronology while still pulling from the earliest material.
That leaves the next step unresolved, even if the long-term plan is not. Sonnenshine said, “That’s the plan,” but she did not name which Wilder book will anchor the next season. For now, the adaptation has done the most important thing a launch can do: it has made its method plain, and it has told viewers that Charles Ingalls and the rest of the family will be followed through the books, not rushed past them.
