Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly making a new Fallout game, and the project is said to have taken the place of a sequel to Avowed that had already begun development before it was canceled. The report lands as layoffs continue to reshape work at Obsidian and across Xbox, turning what might have been a straightforward franchise update into a much harder read on the studio’s near-term future.

The timing explains why the news is drawing attention now. Avowed arrived last year as an action-RPG set in Eora, the same fantasy world explored in Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, while Obsidian’s name still carries weight with players who remember Fallout: New Vegas. That history makes any new Fallout project from the studio feel like more than another assignment; it recalls a game people have wanted to see followed up for 15 years or more.

reported the shift this week, and the detail that matters most is not simply that Obsidian is returning to Fallout. It is that the new game is apparently being built instead of a sequel to Avowed, which had already moved beyond the idea stage. In practical terms, that means the project was far enough along to be described as in development before it was shelved, a sign that the studio’s plans were changed before any public reveal or release window.

That is where the good news and the bad news sit side by side. A new Fallout game from Obsidian is the kind of development many players would normally greet with excitement, especially given the studio’s track record with Fallout: New Vegas. But it comes wrapped in the kind of cuts that usually narrow, not expand, a studio’s options: a canceled sequel, layoffs at Obsidian and across Xbox, and a pipeline that now looks more fragile than celebratory.

Obsidian’s recent output shows how much is already on its plate. The studio created The Outer Worlds, which was followed by two DLC releases, Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon, and by the Spacer's Choice Edition with higher resolution, reworked lighting and environments, and other performance improvements. The Outer Worlds 2 is also in the mix, which makes the decision to shift resources toward Fallout look less like a simple expansion and more like a reordering of priorities under pressure.

For now, the biggest unanswered question is not whether the Fallout name can still draw attention. It is how much of Obsidian’s roadmap survived the cancellation, and whether the new project represents a fresh start or just the most visible piece of a studio being forced to do more with less. A separate report on worker treatment, Obsidian Entertainment Class Action Lawsuit Over Pay and Break Claims, has already shown how closely scrutiny of the company is tracking its business moves.
