The American Museum of Natural History is shutting down 79th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues on Saturday, July 11, for a free outdoor block party tied to the final Manhattanhenge of 2026. The street will turn into a sunset gathering spot, with the full sun set to lock into the canyon of buildings at exactly 8:20pm.
The event starts at 3pm with the From Stoops to Stadiums festival, then moves into an evening built around the light itself. Brooklyn’s Jazzy Jumpers will perform Double Dutch, visitors can challenge a neighbor to a game of chess, and they can also learn how extreme heat affects global sports. Soccer fans will be able to watch FIFA World Cup quarterfinal matches inside the museum, including Norway vs. England and Argentina vs. Switzerland, while the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra provides live music as the sun drops.
Jackie Faherty, an AMNH astronomer, will lead a ticketed 3D presentation at 7pm in the LeFrak Giant-Screen Theater, a reminder that not every part of the day is open to everyone even as the outdoor celebration is free. That split matters because the museum is drawing a broad crowd to the street while keeping one of the science-centered pieces behind a ticketed door.
