Johnny Galecki is heading back to the stage this fall, taking on Tennessee Williams in the Chicago production of Kowalski, his first acting role in seven years. The move puts him back in front of an audience after a long pause that he has described as time spent more living than performing.
That return matters now because the run is set and the clock is already ticking. Kowalski is scheduled for Sept. 19 through Oct. 25, and tickets go on sale July 15, giving theater fans a short window before the fall engagement begins.
Galecki, 51, framed the decision as one he could not pass up. In a statement to Variety, he said Gregg’s writing and Colin’s vision made it impossible to say no, and on Instagram on July 7 he said he was honored to return to the stage in his city by the lake this fall. He also said those seven years were not separate from the work, but part of a life he was fortunate enough to live more fully.
The break gives the casting some weight. For an actor best known to many TV viewers, seven years away from the stage is long enough to make a return feel like an event rather than a routine booking. Galecki has also kept the period personal, posting family trip photos from Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. with Morgan Galecki and his two kids, a small public glimpse during an otherwise quiet stretch.
What comes next is simple and specific: Kowalski opens its run in Chicago on Sept. 19 and closes Oct. 25, with tickets available starting July 15. For Galecki, the real question now is not whether he is back, but how his first role in seven years lands when the curtain rises.
